Stop Feeding These “5 Whites” to Your Family

​​Did you know that what we eat everyday is not all angelic and there are "HIDDEN POISONS" inside?
These "poisons" are the "FIVE WHITES" ingredients, refined and processed food, yet, lots of nutrients are destroyed. 
Here comes to have a closer look on what are those 「FIVE WHITE」 that we should prevent. 

1) White or Refined Rice

White rice is a grain that consists only of starchy carbohydrates with some protein inside the endosperm. During the process of refining, nutritious outer layer bran and natural germs are removed. Those starchy carbohydrates can lead to many harmful effects. 

Reason to avoid it:

Even though white rice is a good source in providing energy to us, yet, it is also a high glycemic index (GI) food, with GI index 84. Glycemic index is a value range from 0-100 to assign the speed of food to increase the level of blood glucose levels after digestion by the body. Therefore, a higher GI value indicates the food increases the blood sugar level in the faster manner, meanwhile it will increase the risk of diabetes.

What to eat instead:

We can stop eating white rice and change to the substituent with lower GI index for example, brown rice, bario rice, black rice, quinoa and cauliflower rice instead.

2) Refined White Sugar

Sugar is derived from two main plant sources, sugar cane and sugar beets. Almost 80% of the sugar is extracted from sugar cane and  produced in over 120 countries. It is widely used in food because of its ability to improve the taste.

Reason to avoid it:

Regardless of its pleasant taste, refined white sugar is considered as "empty calories" because it contains little to no nutrients (vitamin, minerals, fibre, protein). In other words, sugar only will provide calories to the body and create excess pounds in weight. During the production, harmful chemicals were possibly added to the sugar. Besides, many scientific studies suggest that sugar actually contributes to cancer, obesity as well as Type 2 diabetes.

What to eat instead:

Refined white sugar can be replaced by unrefined cane sugar, molasses sugar, natural fruits, agave syrup, maple syrup and dates. These substituents are more natural and lesser chemical being added during the process.

3)  Pasteurised Cow's Milk

Pasteurised milk is a dairy milk that has been heated and cooled to specified temperature and time to kill pathogens. They are the microorganisms that may make us fall ill and are usually found in the raw milk. The purpose of the pasteurisation process is to ensure the milk is safe to consume by consumers.

Reason to avoid it: 

Pasteurisation process is able to prolong the shelf life of milk however, it also harms the nutritive value. Beneficial nutrients for example, natural enzymes, vitamin A, B, B12, C and phosphorus are removed. Phosphorus is an important mineral to the body because it assists in calcium absorption as it involves in bones and teeth formation. It also provides some health benefits which are:

  • helping in muscle contraction 
  • synthesis of DNA and RNA 
  • assist in muscle recovery after exercise

    What to eat instead:

    Plant-based milk is suggested to replace cow's milk because it has lower saturated fat and calories. The examples of substituents for pasteurised cow's milk are soy, almond, rice, oat and pea milk.

    4) White Flour

    White flour serves many functions in cuisines, especially bakery (cookies, cakes, pastries). White flour is usually treated with a bleaching agent, either chlorine or benzoyl peroxide. These bleaching agents will somehow increase the chemical composition inside the white flour itself. 

    Reason to avoid it: 

    During the production of white flour, nutritious bran and germ are removed, only endosperm with starchy carbohydrates remained.The bran itself is rich in fibre, antioxidants and vitamin B, whereas germ is high in Vitamin B, minerals, protein and fat. Bran and germ removal process provides white flour presents as a more shelf-stable product, however, all essential nutrients removed are crucial for the digestion and limit the body from absorbing essential nutrients.

    What to eat instead:

    Unlike bleached white flour, using unbleached flour and whole grain flour are more beneficial because they are exposed to fewer chemicals and more nutritious respectively.

    5) Refined White Salt

    Salt is a commonly used mineral that primarily consists of sodium and chloride. Generally in the production of refined salt, most of the beneficial minerals are removed and provide a longer shelf life. In fact, refined salt is bleached to obtain a white colour because the manufacturers believe "cleaner and whiter salt" is able to increase the sales.  

    Reason to avoid it: 

    Natural important mineral, iodine is removed during the process of refined white salt. Iodine is an element that the body cannot produce and it is used for thyroid hormone synthesis, for example triiodothyronine and thyroxine. These two hormones are important because they serve the function in regulating blood pressure, heart rate as well as body temperature. Deficiency of iodine in the body may cause abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland, this disease is called goiter.  

    What to eat instead:
